Exploding barrels have been a staple throughout the Skylight series, generally used as traps to be shot at or detonated, and are most effective when the user can chain them with increasing power using the Barrel Chain Competency. Despite their massive power, it's very likely that any allies caught in the giant explosion chain will be destroyed alongside enemies.
